Description of the drug: composition and action

Hexoral Spray 0.2% (Hexoral) is a colorless liquid with a menthol aroma. Available in aerosol cans. Each contains 40 ml of the product. The kit may include one spray nozzle or several.

The active substance is hexetidine (0.2%). It disrupts the metabolic processes in fungi, bacteria and destroys the outer shell of pathogenic microbes, which leads to their death. Effective against most strains of gram-positive bacteria, Candida fungi, many viruses. May produce results in the treatment of infections caused by gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Proteus.

Hexetidine adheres well (sticks) to the mucous membranes. Traces of the chemical can be found on the tissues within three days after a single use. The presence of active concentrations of the component is observed for 12 hours, so there is no need to use the aerosol more than twice a day.

Hexoral spray contains additional components:

  • polysorbate 80;
  • citric acid monohydrate;
  • sodium saccharinate;
  • levomenthol;
  • eucalyptus leaf oil;
  • ethanol;
  • sodium hydroxide;
  • purified water;
  • sodium calcium edetate;
  • nitrogen.

Medical alcohol enhances the antibacterial effect of the drug. And levomenthol gives it a weak anesthetic effect.

Contraindications

Hexoral is a medication for external use. Its active substance adheres to the mucosa without penetrating into the tissue, and is practically not absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, the spray is not contraindicated in pregnant and lactating women.

Use of HexoralYou can not use the drug for patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug and children under the age of three.A small child cannot hold his breath while spraying. As a result, fine particles can enter the mucosa of the lower respiratory tract, which is fraught with spasm of the trachea and / or larynx. With laryngospasm, breathing is difficult, and sometimes it stops altogether.

However, the answer to the question of how many years you can use Hexoral for the treatment of children is not always so simple. Subject to the complete exclusion of laryngospasm, the pediatrician can prescribe a spray even for a child younger than one year old.

Hexoral is not absorbed into the bloodstream and is absolutely safe. The main thing is that its fine particles do not get on the tissues of the lower respiratory tract during an accidental inhalation. And for this, it is enough that the child can not breathe for about three seconds and calmly react to the introduction of the nozzle-sprayer into the mouth.

Side effects

Side effects after applying the spray are rarely detected: less than one case out of 10 thousand has been recorded. Among the possible reactions distinguish:

  • allergic - urticaria, angioedema;
  • neurotic - dysgeusia, ageusia;
  • from the digestive system - nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, increased salivary glands, dysphagia;
  • on the part of the respiratory system - shortness of breath, cough;
  • local - irritation or inflammation of the oral mucosa, burning, discoloration of the teeth, the formation of ulcerations and blisters.

If side effects appear after using the drug, you should consult a doctor to eliminate them and prescribe another medication.

Application procedure

Hexoral aerosol is available in cylinders without dispensers. This means that the product is sprayed all the time while the patient presses on the release nozzle. Recommended spraying rate is 1-2 seconds.

Detailed instructions for the use of Hexoral aerosol for the treatment of children and adults:

  • Put the removable nozzle on the spray bottle.
  • Insert the tip of the nozzle into the oral cavity so that the product enters the back of the throat. The pressure in the tank is enough to spray the spray at 6-8 cm.
  • Take a deep breath and hold your breath.
  • Press on the nozzle and do not let it go for about two seconds.
  • Exhale and continue full breathing.

How to not apply Hexoral

Having settled on the mucosa, the aerosol components remain active for 12 hours, therefore it is recommended to spray the drug twice a day - both times after eating. To increase the effectiveness of the drug, food and drinks should not be taken for two to three hours after its use.

It is more convenient to treat the mucous membranes of the mouth with stomatitis in babies with a sterile bandage soaked in a medication: you need to spray a little aerosol on the bandage and lubricate the affected skin areas with it.

Overdose and first aid

With topical application, an overdose of Hexoral aerosol is impossible, since its active substance is not toxic and does not penetrate the bloodstream. If a small amount of the drug is swallowed, vomiting will begin, and significant absorption of the components will still not occur.

If large doses of aerosol are swallowed, gastric lavage should be performed and a physician should be consulted to prescribe symptomatic therapy.

Like aerosol, the solution is applied twice a day. The rinse should be 30 seconds, after which the liquid is spit. The best option for treating stomatitis in a child is to lubricate the wounds with a sterile bandage soaked in a solution.

Ingestion leads to a vomiting reflex, so the active substances do not penetrate the blood even in this case. Like the spray, Hexoral solution can be prescribed to children over the age of three. However, the doctor has the right to allow its use for the treatment of younger patients.

The drug is effective for bacterial, viral and fungal infections affecting the oral mucosa. But with throat diseases, it is better to give preference to a finely divided aerosol.
